I've quoted this passage before, but I think it bears repeating.
Some of the defenders of the Duggar family are saying that those mean ol' godless liberals are persecuting the Duggars because of their Christian Faith. The Apostle Peter had something to say about that:
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffereing, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. -- (1 Peter 4:12-16 NIV)Two things to take away here. One is that if you are truly being persecuted because of your love of Christ, as the Duggans and their supporter believe they are, then quitcher whining. You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred. If you are being picked on because of Jesus, Peter says, you are blessed and you will share in his glory.
But this is the important part, and the reason why I bolded it: If people hate you BECAUSE YOU'RE DOING BAD THINGS, then you get no brownie points. Being Forgiven by Christ does not give me a free pass to be a jerk.
This ought to be a no-brainer, but too many of my fellow Christians latch onto the first verse of that passage and ignore the rest.
